Strategies for Finding a Job in a Tough Job Market
By Penny Loretto
Finding a job in a tough economy can be an extremely challenging and frustrating. Since many of us identify who we are as a person with what we do for a job, losing one’s job can be a very humiliating and demoralizing experience. Job loss can lead many people into feelings of depression and hopelessness as they try to unravel and make sense of their past and develop a successful plan for the future. Even though we are continually bombarded with bleak news about the state of the economy from the media, the good news is that losing one’s job can be an opportunity for growth and a chance to make important changes that better align our career decisions with who we really are and what we need to do to better meet our professional career goals and personal expectations. Many people have gone back to school, trained for new positions, or even began their own businesses only because they were faced with a recent job loss and consciously chose to turn that loss into a positive experience. Using this time of crisis wisely by thoroughly assessing your next career move, can be one of the most important keys to turning your own job loss into a positive and life changing experience.
Two of the most effective techniques you can use when looking for a job during a recession or tough job market is maintaining a positive attitude and developing a proactive approach to the job search. Although many people believe that they are doing everything they need to do when looking for a job, in reality these people have spent the majority of their time merely perusing online jobs and answering ads that appear in the classified section of their local newspaper. Since 85% of jobs are never advertised and a small percentage of jobs are secured through online job postings, finding a job during a challenging job market calls for a more proactive approach followed by a series of positive actions. Job searching requires the use of several strategies and it is these combined strategies that ultimately increases your chances in landing the right job.
Top 8 Strategies for finding a job in a tough economy:
- Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle.
- Develop a Job Search Plan.
- Create a Targeted Resume & Cover Letter.
- Research Career Options & Employers.
- Prospect for Jobs with Employers of Interest.
- Network with Professionals in the Field.
- Enlist Assistance from Recruiters & Temporary Agencies.
- Check Out Online Job Boards, Professional Associations, Classified Ads, etc.

I think you’re right. Interviewees frequently need to prepare their selves a lot better ahead of participating in business interviews. For instance, if public speaking is a skill-set labeled as very important for the job, then they have to show they have this skill level throughout the occupation interview. Not merely depend on a piece of paper to prove it.
I read a article under the same title some time ago, but this articles quality is much, much better. How you do this?
That is really interesting. It presented me some ideas and I’ll be posting them on my website eventually. I’m bookmarking your site and I’ll be back. Thank you again!
